Cooperation Humboldt, Creating a Solidarity Economy

Cooperation Humboldt is dedicated to creating a Solidarity Economy in their local community. This organization administers a series of concrete projects, all designed to meet the material needs of the community while they transition their community away from power-over, exploitation, and consumption towards power-with, collaboration, and regeneration. Their projects include:

* Operating an Extensive COVID Community Response
* Building a Local Food Forest: From free food pantries to community fruit trees, etc. - Click Here for Website.
* Incubating Worker-Owned Cooperatives - Website
* Developing an EcoVillage
* Exploring Housing Cooperatives - Website
                                                    * Support Public Banking

Details of these projects can be found on the linked websites above. Cooperation Humboldt is an evolving community plan that puts people before profits and values community and shared prosperity. They are interested in creating a bioregional network of similar efforts across the Pacific Northwest, from the Bay Area to Washington state. This presentation will show us how projects like these can be initiated in our own communities.

David Cobb is a "people's lawyer," who has sued corporate polluters, lobbied elected officials, run for political office, and been arrested for non-violent civil disobedience. He was the Green Party nominee for President in 2004 and, as a presidential candidate, forced a recount in Ohio (which, unfortunately, the Democratic candidate did not support in spite of all the voting irregularities and fraud in that state). However, the recount demonstrated problems, including voter suppression, and a hearing was conducted by an ad hoc committee before Congress in 2006 and aired on C-SPAN three times. In 2010, Cobb founded Move to Amend, a campaign for a constitutional amendment to abolish "corporate personhood." He also serves on the Boards of US Solidarity Economy Network and Transition US.

Sometimes "Nothing" is a Real Cool Hand, A Philosopher's Perspective

The ability to question, live with doubt, and embrace the possibilities that nothingness allows have been the musings of philosophers for millennia. Sam Keen is one of those philosophers who thinks deeply and questions thoroughly. He sees this time of quarantine as a time for reflection, questioning, defining our purpose, finding new ways to live with each other and heal the planet. Sam provides an important container for greater meaning and purpose to emerge. Being able to dwell in "not knowing" allows us to explore, discover, and create. Or, as Sam says, "All philosophy begins with Wonder."

Sam Keen is a noted philosopher, professor, and author. For 20 years, he was a contributing editor at Psychology Today magazine and he is the author of many books, including the NY Times bestseller, Fire in the Belly; Faces of the Enemy; In the Absence of God, and others. He co-produced Faces of the Enemy, as award-winning PBS documentary and was the subject of Bill Moyers' special on Myths we Live By. He has lectured at Princeton University and hold MA and PhD degrees in philosophy and theology from Princeton and Harvard.

Uncivil Liberties: Deconstructing Libertarianism

A Praxis Peace Institute book
Uncivil Liberties: Deconstructing Libertarianism

  Taking on the tenets of libertarianism and ideas associated with libertarianism, the authors challenge the American myths that promote rugged individualism, the lone hero, endless economic growth, and American exceptionalism. They explore the role that ideologies play in helping us make sense of the world and revisit the experiment --- still unproved --- of American democracy.

  The six authors place the myths in historical and ideological contexts and explore the makings of civil society, social justice, and economic fairness. One author, who was a libertarian in his youth, deconstructs their philosophy using only their definitions and arguments in a brilliant deconstruction.

Citing successful alternatives to laissez-faire and corporate capitalism, the authors promote existing models that celebrate the dignity of humankind by promoting empathy, cooperation, and respect. This book not only deconstructs, it constructs a possible world using concrete examples that have a proven success rate and high levels of human happiness.
This book is a must-read for anyone invested in modern politics and the future of the United States.
