                                  DENIS HAYES
From the Original Earth Day in 1970 to Today
Accomplishments, Lost Opportunities, and Projections for the Next Decade

Denis Hayes was the organizer and founder of the original Earth Day in 1970! He is President of the Bullitt Foundation and CEO of the Bullitt Center in Seattle, which is lauded as the first major building to meet the ultra-rigorous Living Building Challenge. Denis Hayes made Earth Day happen. He left graduate school at Harvard to work for Senator Gaylord Nelson as national coordinator of the event, and in later years took Earth Day international, organizing events in 141 nations in 1990 and adding China in 2000.  He still chairs the board of the Earth Day Network. During the Carter Administration, he was head of the Solar Energy Research Institute.

He has served on dozens of governing boards, including those of Stanford University, the World Resources Institute, the Federation of American Scientists, and the Energy Foundation. Time Magazine has name Hayes as a "Hero of the Planet." He has also received the national Jefferson Medal for Outstanding Public Service as well as the highest awards bestowed by the Sierra Club, The Humane Society of the United States, the National Wildlife Federation, the Natural Resources Council of America, the American Solar Energy Society. and others.  His book, "Cowed: The Hidden Impact of 93 Million Cows on American's Health, Economy, Politics, Culture, and Environment," puts on spotlight on the impact that Big Ag has on the health of the planet and people. Don't miss this opportunity to hear one of the founders of the modern environmental movement!

                  RICHARD L. ABEL
How Autocrats Attack Expertise and Abuse Power

With Trump as the Republican Party's nominee, we are again facing a plethora of disinformation, anti-science rhetoric, and outright fascist talking points and policies. Abel will talk about the slippery slope from democracy to dictatorship to autocracy that has been the right wing path in America. The assault on science has been a threat to our health and safety. Autocrats attack professional expertise in an Orwellian world, where "ignorance is strength" and where, as Hannah  Arendt wrote, "people believe everything and nothing." Many people have lost faith in governance because of the dangerous disinformation campaigns and the media's complicity in them. The both-siderism that equates falsehood with truth and values uneducated opinions on par with educated ones has made reality relative. Richard Abel will explain how this works and what we can do about it.

Richard Abel, PhD, is a professor of law, a specialist in African Law Studies and a renowned socio-legal scholar. He received a BA from Harvard University, an LLB from Columbia University and his PhD from the University of London where he was a Marshall Scholar. He has been a member of the faculty of the UCLA School of Law since 1974 and is a past president of the Law and Society Association and editor of the Law and Science Review. Our program will focus on his books, How Autocrats Attack Expertise and How Autocrats Abuse Power. His new book includes an introduction by U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-CT).
