RICHARD SAKWA - The Culture of the Second Cold War

Richard Sakwa is a British political scientist and a former professor of Russian and European politics at the University of Kent, England. He is also a senior research fellow at the National Research University-Higher School of Economics in Moscow. While completing his doctorate on Moscow politics, he spent a year on a British Council scholarship at Moscow State University (1979-80), and then worked for two years in Moscow in the ‘Mir’ Science and Technology Publishing House. Before moving to Kent he lectured at the University of Essex and the University of California, Santa Cruz.  He has written several books about Russian and Central and Eastern European communist and post-communist politics.

He is the author of several books on the region, including Deception: Russiagate and the New Cold War; Frontline Ukraine: Crisis in the Borderlands; and The Lost Peace: How the West Failed to Prevent a Second Cold War, which we featured in an interview in 2024. In this interview we will explore the ideas in his latest book, “The Culture of the Second Cold War,” which is a consise and accessible analysis of the new Cold War.
