Jim Garrison has been a social and political activist with the anti-war, anti-nuclear, citizen diplomacy and environmental movements since the 1960s. In the 1990s and early 2000s, he was President and co-founder of the Gorbachev Foundation and the State of the World Forum with Mikhail Gorbachev. The purpose of the State of the World Forum was to assess world politics at the end of the Cold War and the possibilities for peace in the emerging world order. The forum became a brain trust and one of the most influential conferences during that time. The conferences, convened in San Francisco and New York, were attended by presidents, statesmen, and young leaders from six continents. Garrison was also executive director of the Esalen Soviet-American Exchange Program at Esalen Institute in Big Sur from 1985 to 1990.
Garrison served as President of Wisdom University, a private graduate school in San Francisco founded by theologian Matthew Fox, and when Wisdom was acquired by Ubiquity University in 2013, he assumed its presidency. Since the beginning of the pandemic, he has been convening conversations about world events called “Humanity Rising,” an online program.
He has written numerous books, including Citizen Diplomats, Civilization and The Transformation of Power, and America as Empire. He received a BA in History from the University of Santa Clara, an MA in History of Religion from Harvard, and a PhD in Philosophical Theology from the University of Cambridge.
